Markus Wilhelm, Chief Executive Officer
Markus Wilhelm has more than 25 years of experience in the media industry, primarily with Bertelsmann AG and Time Warner. He was a long-serving CEO for publishing and direct marketing firms including Bookspan and Doubleday Direct, and during his tenure, Markus oversaw an international staff of thousands in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, China and Korea. He currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board at the UNC School of Public Health and as a board member of NC Clean Energy Technology Center.
Cathy Wilhelm, Co-Founder
Cathy Wilhelm’s passion for the environment combined with her 20 years of real estate experience provided her with the skills and knowledge needed to co-found a green construction company, Strata Construction, and Strata Solar, where she works as the Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to Strata, Cathy worked on projects in China involving cost-benefit analyses of soil erosion management controls for the Yellow River. She also worked as an econometrician, managing energy forecast modeling projects for the Canadian public utility Ontario Hydro.
Brian Herndon, General Counsel
Brian Herndon joined Strata Clean Energy in 2015 as its General Counsel and continues to serve in that role. Formerly, Brian was a partner at the law firm of Blanco Tackabery, where he led its clean energy practice group. Under his leadership, the Blanco clean energy practice group became the go-to firm for renewable energy developers with North Carolina projects. In that role, Brian and his team assisted Strata in the development and financing of essentially all of its projects and in many other matters.
Brian’s law practice spans 35 years, with substantial experience in tax credit finance, commercial real estate finance, structured finance, business organizations and mergers and acquisitions to name a few. In addition to solar and energy storage, Brian has represented developers of landfill gas-to-energy, biomass and anaerobic digester projects. Brian holds a BA degree from North Carolina State University and is a magna cum laude graduate of the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.
Jimmy Chuang, Chief Financial Officer
Jimmy Chuang brings over fifteen years of experience in the renewable energy industry to Strata. As CFO, he oversees the finance, accounting, and treasury functions; manages the company's capital raise and M&A activities; and helps identify and build relationships with banks and institutional investors. Throughout his career, Jimmy has executed various transactions for an aggregate value of $50 billion. Prior to joining Strata, he held senior executive positions at GCL-Poly, SolarCity, and MMA Capital, and built and financed more than 3,000 megawatts and $7 billion of North America residential, commercial, and utility scale solar and energy storage projects.
Earlier in his career, Jimmy was an investment banker with Merrill Lynch, and also a cofounder of Brite Energy powered by Protection 1 (funded by GTCR and Morgan Stanley, and acquired by Apollo Global Management). Jimmy received a B.S. degree from UC Berkeley and was honored as a Bill Gates Scholar.
Joshua Rogol, Chief Development Officer
Joshua is currently the Chief Development Officer at Strata Clean Energy, where he leads origination and development across the United States for Strata’s solar and battery energy storage portfolio. Prior to Strata, Joshua led global sales and strategy for a leading energy storage technology manufacturer, developing the company’s first utility scale project in Europe, microgrid facility in Nicaragua, and behind-the-meter C&I project in the United States. His previous experience also included leading global development for Urban Green Energy (UGE), helping to take the company public in 2014. Additionally, opening their Shanghai offices, Joshua was co-founder of Photon Consulting, a leading renewable energy consulting firm, supporting IPOs, M&A, and global business strategy for companies such as First Solar, Canadian Solar, Hanwha, and Trina Solar.
Joshua is dedicated to community involvement and has served on the board of directors at blueEnergy, a global nonprofit focused on empowering healthy families and resilient communities by unlocking access to renewable energy, safe water, sanitation, hygiene, and sustainable food security in the face of climate change. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Tufts University, in International Relations and Economics, and completed additional studies at La Universidad de Playa Ancha in Valparaiso, Chile.
Bill Stark, Chief Administrative Officer
Bill Stark is the Chief Administrative Officer of Strata Solar and leads our Human Resources, Information Technology, Enterprise Systems, Recruiting, Fleet, Security, Travel and Administration teams.
Prior to joining Strata, Bill founded Stark Energy LLC, where he consulted both domestic and international clients pursuing residential, commercial, or utility-scale solar investment, development, or distribution. Prior to Stark Energy, Bill was a founding team member and led sales, marketing and/or operations functions for residential and commercial solar start-ups funded by KPCB, Google Ventures, Edison International, and Duke Energy, including solar-as-a-service financing platforms Clean Power Finance and Sungevity. Bill earned a BS in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
Gary Freeman, SVP of Operations & Maintenance
Gary Freeman is the SVP of Strata’s O&M business. Gary is responsible for all O&M activities supporting a solar portfolio of roughly 3GW. His team has also begun providing maintenance support for battery storage projects. Under Gary’s leadership, Strata has significantly increased its self-perform capabilities to provide improved plant performance, and work force flexibility. Gary has over 40 years of experience in the utility industry including his time at Strata.
Prior to joining Strata, Gary served in numerous leadership roles at Duke Energy (formerly Progress Energy) and SCANA. In his last role at Duke Energy, Gary led the team responsible for interconnecting over 3,000MW of solar assets to grid including negotiating power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements and the studies to support the interconnection. While at SCANA and at Progress Energy, Gary led the Power Trading functions which were responsible for optimizing the generation portfolios while serving native load and creating significant value from the energy trading market. Gary began his career as an engineer supporting SCANA’s natural gas LDC. Gary earned a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and a MBA from the University of North Carolina.
Nick Mshar, SVP of Field Operations
Nicholas Mshar is the Sr. Vice President of Field Operations at Strata Clean Energy. He started at Strata as our first installer, designed and built our first qualified facility, and since has overseen the construction of several gigawatts of utility scale photovoltaic power plants. He thoroughly understands all stages of project execution from development to operations and maintenance. In his current role, Nick is responsible for project management, construction, safety, quality, and commissioning. Before assuming this position, he held posts as PV System Designer and Installation manager, Director of Operations and Maintenance, VP of Quality and Commissioning and VP of C&I.
Nick applies his experience to pioneer innovative construction methods, ensuring quality and safety, achieving success in project schedules, and bringing the best value to Strata’s customers. Prior to joining Strata in 2009, Nicholas was a designer with Duda I Paine Architects. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is an Instructor at Solar Energy International.
